Mein Schiff 1

Last weekend TUI's Mein Schiff 1 called into Bergen. The following photos were taken alongside at Dokkeskjærskaien.

Launched in 1996, Mein Schiff 1 entered service as Galaxy for Celebrity Cruises, with whom she sailed successfully for over a decade.

During her time as Galaxy she featured as the setting for the popular British TV series The Cruise, which greatly increased public awareness of the changing cruise industry, and undoubtedly engouraged many to take their first ocean-going holiday.

In 2009 Galaxy left the Celebrity Cruises fleet for a new joint venture with TUI. Following a month-long, 50million Euro refit, she emerged as Mein Schiff (the '1' was added later as more ships joined the fleet), with overhauled interiors and a distinctive new exterior paint scheme.

Despite her age, 18 years into her service life Mein Shiff 1 still cuts a modern profile. The addition of a number of new private balconies during her 2009 refit helps to bring her in line with newer ships, in terms of both appearance and facilities.

Whilst alongside the following day, Mein Schiff 1 experienced a collision with a seismic research vessel which had lost engine control. A video of the collision can be found on the TV2 website here.

Following the incident, in which noone was seriously injured, Mein Schiff 1 made a delayed departure after a full damage survey. Finally slipping her moorings at around 21:30 she continued on her cruise, with full repairs scheduled for a later date.

MS Trollfjord - Photo Tour

Up next in the series of photo tours on board the ships of Hurtigruten is MS Trollfjord. Regular readers of this blog will know the drill by now; MS Trollfjord is one of a fleet of 11 ships that together offer daily departures from Bergen on the Express route along the coast of Norway. The ships serve a dual roll as both cruise ships and cargo ships, and are vital in connecting many of the smaller communities in the northern part of the country. Pacific Princess

Calling into Bergen today was the modestly sized Pacific Princess . Considerably smaller than most modern mass-market cruise ships, many passengers are drawn to the more intimate experience on offer, with a relaxed atmosphere and shorter queues. Pacific Princess originally enetered service in 1998 as R Three for the now-defunct Renaissance Cruises. She was one of an ambitious series of eight identical ships built for the line between 1998 and 2001. Unfortunately this turned out to be a step too far, and Renaissance Cruises ceased operations in 2001 (this is often attributed to unlucky timing; their closure came with the massive global downturn in travel that followed the 9/11 attacks in the USA). In the following years, this fleet of eight smart, modern cruise ships found their way to a variety of cruise lines across the world.
