Discovery & Costa Fortuna

Today two cruise ships called in Bergen; Discovery and Costa Fortuna. These photos were taken from the bathing platform at Nordnes park. Now the blog is up and running I will take a little time to provide information along with the photos.

MV DISCOVERY

Built in 1971, Discovery is one of the older cruise ships operating today. As Island Princess she appeared in the 1970s TV series 'The Love Boat', along with her sister Pacific Princess.

Today, with around 700 passengers and 300 crew onboard she continued onto Tilbury on the final stage of her current trip for Cruise & Maritime Voyages.

COSTA FORTUNA

Costa Fortuna was built in 2003. She is an evolution of the Destiny class ships built for Carnival Cruise Line. Further iterations of this design went on to include her near sister Costa Concordia, which struck rocks, capsized and partially sank in January 2012 with the loss of 32 lives (follow the Concordia salvage operation at theparbucklingproject.com).

Costa Fortuna has a gross tonnage of 102,000, a length of 273 metres, and can accommodate 2700 passengers with a crew of over 1000.

After turning to leave the harbour she passed behind the offshore supply vessel Far Solitaire before making her way under the Askøy bridge and on to her next destination, Kristiansand.

SUPERYACHT SERENE

On my walk home I passed the superyacht Serene, again moored at Festningskai following her visit last week.

Tomorrow Thomson Spirit will dock at Bontelabo, with Bergen as her final stop on a cruise before returning to Newcastle. Check back to the blog to see the photo report.
