Built in Nagasaki, Japan, by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, she was launched in 1990 as Crystal Harmony, and sailed successfully for American-based, Japanese-owned Crystal Cruises for many years.

In 2006, the parent company Nippon Yusen made the decision to transfer Crystal Harmony to serve the Japanese market, and she was renamed Asuka II.

With a gross tonnage of just over 50,000 and a length of 241m, Asuka II can accommodate up to 960 passengers, served by a crew of 565. This makes her, by some margin, the largest cruise ship operating for the Japanese market.

Asuka II predominantly sails short 3- or 4-night cruises, from her home port of Yokohama, but also sails wordwide on longer voyages, bringing her to ports such as Bergen.

She is a handsome ship, and her attractive profile and large number of provate balconies helping her to look younger than the 25 years she has spent in service.

After a day alongside at Bontelabo, Asuka II slipped her moorings and departed Bergen.

MS Trollfjord - Photo Tour

Up next in the series of photo tours on board the ships of Hurtigruten is MS Trollfjord. Regular readers of this blog will know the drill by now; MS Trollfjord is one of a fleet of 11 ships that together offer daily departures from Bergen on the Express route along the coast of Norway. The ships serve a dual roll as both cruise ships and cargo ships, and are vital in connecting many of the smaller communities in the northern part of the country. Britannia

Today P&O's flagship Britannia called into Bergen. I was able to watch her sailaway, and took the following photos from the cruise berth at Bontelabo. With sing-along pop music blaring from her loudspeakers her departure was less than subtle, but spirits seemed high as passengers enjoyed the sunny Bergen afternoon. Britannia was built by Fincantieri in Monfalcone, Italy, and entered service for P&O in March 2015. With a tonnage of 143,730 she is the second-largest ship that will visit Bergen this year (surpassed only by Cunard's Queen Mary 2 ). Britannia has space for up to 4324 passengers and a crew of 1400. Despite her high-sides and slightly blocky appearance, Britannia is a relatively handsome, well-balanced ship, and she certainly made an impression on the Bergen waterfront whilst she was alongside.
